(2023) (with: Paweł Krzyworzeka) How to Be an Ethnographer. Cheltenham: Edward Elgar. Offering a practical guide on How to be an Ethnographer, this book will be a valuable resource for advanced students and early career researchers of organization studies, anthropology and sociology. It will also be a useful introduction to scholars exploring ethnography as a new research method. ‘How to Be an Ethnographer, written by Monika Kostera and Paweł Krzyworzeka, is an important work that provides unique, timely, and exceptional insights into the practice of ethnography. The authors provide a new chapter in the history of ethnography, encompassing theories and methods of conducting ethnography not only in anthropology, but also management and organization studies, by putting them in dialogue with one another. The volume introduces a state-of-the-art ethnography: an imaginative approach that is interdisciplinary, embodied, open-ended, reflexive as well as attends to how ethnographic practices are shaped by researcher’s professional and personal lives - from disciplinary norms and academic communities, to family and safety concerns, to issues of access. Vignettes from fieldwork illuminate the entire ethnographic journey from initial expectations to discovering less obvious aspects of everyday life in the field. The chapters in the book structured around different methods and principals - observing, sensing, studying up and down, and representing - will enable both experienced and aspiring ethnographers to develop a practice that will deepen and develop their ethnographic inquiry.’ (2022) How to Write Differently: A quest for meaningful academic writing. Cheltenham: Edward Elgar. Responding to the trend of formulaic writing in the academic community, How To Write Differently offers a refreshing approach to academic writing in a practical format. ‘Nanni Moretti, the Italian film director, once said: “those who speak badly, think badly and live badly”. This masterly written book teaches us that this adage applies, and even more, to the written word. Academics have in their texts their most powerful weapon and sharpest tool. This book reminds us that we need to manage both with the deserved care and respect.’ (2022) An Imaginoscope for Organizers: Liminal stories for liminal times. Zer0 Books. An Imaginoscope for Organizers offers practical exercises to use both individual and collective imagination to activate and mobilize creative organizing impulses. It proposes intellectual, symbolic and poetic food for thought and practice. Each chapter is a step on the quest for creative ideas and practices and introduces a language that can be used to invent and communicate your own. While imagination is one of the most important topics in organization theory and design, it is, unfortunately, one of the least studied. This book by Monika Kostera fills this gap by allowing readers to rediscover their imaginative faculties through a series of experiments, starting with language. By changing the perspective of observers and actors of organizational life, she invites them to participate in the imaginoscopic transmutation of the world of work. - Ghislain Deslandes, Professor, ESCP Business School Every once and a while someone from organizational studies writes something that extends far beyond the boundaries and limits of the field, whereby they achieve negentropy. That is, ideas and writing that give us energy and hope. This is what Monika Kostera has achieved here; it is a book of pedagogical ideas, a response to teaching during the Covid pandemic, an exploration of ethnographic phenomenology and a political statement. Not only is the text poetically powerful; it is rich in ‘imaginiscope’ suggestions, possibilities and interactions, creating a liminal space that we the readers will be eager to enter into and engage with. - Professor Hugo Letiche, Professor Hugo Letiche - LITEM, Institut Mines-TBS Evry/Paris An Imaginoscope for Organizers invites readers to imagine and go beyond the limitations of our imagination to think differently and mobilize collectively against forces that threaten our ability to create alternative futures. A timely, creative, and enchanting interdisciplinary text that will linger with us until we imagine anew. - Professor Alison Pullen Professor of Management and Organization Studies Joint Editor-in-Chief Gender, Work and Organization
(2021) Edited with: Nancy Harding) Organizational Ethnography. Cheltenham: Edward Elgar. Ethnography is at the heart of what researchers in management and organization studies do. This crucial book offers a robust and original overview of ‘doing’ organizational ethnography, guiding readers through the essential qualitative methods for the study of organizations. ‘If only I had a book like this when I was starting out! Organizational Ethnography gives helpful direction for doing this important type of qualitative research in a multitude of ways. Each chapter presents an accessible account of a different ethnographic technique presented by researchers who have practiced it successfully. Insightful examples and helpful tips abound. I highly recommend this book to anyone intending to practice ethnography in organizations, new students and experienced researchers alike.’ Review by Emmanouela Mandalaki in Management Learning (2022), 53(1), 123 -133 Wednesday 24th of March, I make a cup of tea and finally find a calm moment to start reading Kostera and Harding's new book on organizational ethnography. I have been looking so much forward to this moment. I don't want to rush through. (Auto)ethnography is at the core of my existence, while both of the authors' work has been very influential in my personal development as a researcher. After the first few pages, I already start diving into a site of multiplicity, whereby different voices join a chorus to provide complementary methodological perspectives on ethnographic work. I feel home. (2021) (Edited with: Cezary Woźniak) Aesthetics, Organization and Humanistic Management. New York: Routledge. This book is a reaction to the reductionist and exploitative ideas dominating the mainstream contemporary management discourse and practice, and an attempt to broaden the horizons of possibility for both managers and organization scholars. It brings together the scholarly fields of humanistic management and organizational aesthetics, where the former brings in the unshakeable focus on the human condition and concern for dignity, emancipation, and the common good, while the latter promotes reflection, openness, and appreciation for irreducible complexity of existence. It is a journey towards wholeness undertaken by a collective of management and organization theorists, philosophers, artists, and art curators. Reading this book’s contributions can help both academics and practitioners work towards building organizational practices aimed at (re)acquiring wholeness by developing aesthetic awareness allowing for more profound understandings of performativity, insights into the dynamics of power, appreciation of ambiguity and ambivalence, and a much needed grasp of complexity. The varied ways of engaging with art explored by the authors promote imaginative insights into and reflection on the beauty and vicissitudes of organizing, of management knowledge and collective expression. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, practitioners, and students in the fields of organizational theory and practice, business and management history, human resource management, and culture management. Review by Guglielmo Faldetta in Punt0org (2021) 6/2, DOI https://doi.org/10.19245/25.05.pij.6.2.8 In sum, the essays included in the volume give us a precious picture of what an aesthetic approach can offer for a better understanding of organisations. The field of arts can provide organisational scholars with the possibility of a continuous reinterpretation of the lives of organisations, making more sense of their complexity, and avoiding or limiting the reductionism that characterises the majority of studies and theories about them. As we have seen, paintings, music, movies, monuments, literature, etc., provide us with new paths for exploring and interpreting social contexts. Moreover, the call for a humanistic management (Pirson,2017) passes through the aesthetic perspective, that can enable the emergenceof the complexity of organisations by an experienced and experiential narrative of organising (Czarniawska,2009; 2014). Organisational scholars can be able to use such approach, but at the same time they have to demonstrate that they can provide managers with new principles, tools, processes, languages, through which organisations can be better understood and managed. And Hugo Letiche, in the last chapter of the book, gives us an interesting and suggestive example by proposing a filmic approach to research; in this sense, the filmic is anti-methodological and anti-reductionist, opening up the researcher to multiple facets, perspectives, and possibilities. This is not an easy task, but if organisational scholars will succeed, they will contribute to build more responsible and humanistic socio-economic systems. We are convinced that a world where organisations pay attention not only to the rational aspects of their activities, but also to things like sensibility, feelings, emotions, playfulness, creativity, improvisation, would be a better world to live in. And we are sure that the authors of the essays included in the book will succeed in convincing other readers of the same. (2020) After the Apocalypse: Finding hope in organizing. Zer0 Books. Our times of crumbling structures and decaying social bonds are often depicted as apocalyptic. This book takes the apocalypse as a metaphor to help us in the search for meaning in our everyday realities. Yes, the apocalypse is when social structures and institutions fall apart and we are terrified and suffocated by the debris raining down upon us. But “apocalypse" also means “revelation”. The very collapse reveals what dissipating institutions were constructed upon: where there ought to have been foundational common values, most often there is violence and raw power. Yet the values are there, too, and they can be found. This book is a guide to these values, showing how they can be of help to organizers and organizational dreamers. Review by Geoff Ward in Medium. So there is hope. And in After the Apocalypse, the Polish economist and professor of management Monika Kostera takes hope as her theme. Hope shapes experience and, crucially, Kostera wants to inspire it. She makes an earnest and worthy contribution to organisation theory, which deals with the effects of social organisations on the behavior and attitudes of the people within them, as well as the effects of individuals on the organisations. It also considers the success and survival of organisations, the effects of organisations on political and cultural environments, and vice versa, and debates the principles that underpin research in the field. With familiar social structures and institutions perceived to be failing, with neoliberalism and neoconservatism ‘destroying values such as the public good and active citizenry’, the threat of adverse climate change and of ecological disaster, and with prophets of doom abounding, Kostera takes the ‘sociological apocalypse’ as a metaphor in a bid to help us find the meaningful in everyday life. Foundational values The word ‘apocalypse’, coming from the Apocalypse in the biblical book of Revelation, means catastrophic damage or destruction but, as Kostera points out, it also has connotations of ‘revelation’ or ‘uncovering’, showing where things have gone wrong and where common and altruistic foundational values could have led to different outcomes. She offers a guide to such values, showing how they can be of help to organisers and ‘organisational dreamers’. With society comprised of organisations of one kind or another, big and small, from top to bottom, one sees immediately the relevance of her undertaking. Quoting ‘Things fall apart, the centre cannot hold’, from W B Yeats’ apocalyptic poem ‘The Second Coming’, she says that when the centre collapses, and in turbulent times of uncertainty, ‘we look to the margins for a second coming to bring us hope for a future worth living in’. All new ideas tend to be born at the margins, she says, when alternative thinking has been pushed out by the centrifugal force of the centre as it maximises its power. This huge system - the ‘Megamachine’, to use Scheidler’s word - which has been defining social life for centuries, Kostera says, could be cut off by a cataclysmic event, or simply implode. All trajectories seem to point that way: a workplace without workers (robots instead), driverless cars, classes taught by holograms, empty homes investments, policies without compassion, society without solidarity. ‘In the sociological apocalypse, the process of destruction of structures and institutions, there is also an aspect of revelation of what is lying underneath,’ she writes. ‘Among the omnipresent debris of violence, there are precious values that have the potential to unite people. Hope opens doors to perception that can enable us to see these values.’ After the Apocalypse is in four sections: first, Kostera looks from organisation theory to philosophy, sociology and psychology for a setting in a wider human context; second, she pursues the theme of hope in discussing how the creative spirit of poetics, art and music - a subject surprisingly absent from Scheidler’s book given his background in theatre and the visual arts - can be used to counter the ethos of organisations with ‘closed and oppressive settings’ and help them to be ‘liberating and original’. In the third part, Kostera turns to history, myth and religion to find ‘powerful expressions of human creativity and, at the same time, of our sense-making’; and finally, she invites readers to see hope acquire structure - in architecture, radical politics and organisation theory itself - and usher in ‘a new social reality after the apocalypse’. To this end, she urges us to ‘read the books less cited, walk the roads less taken, study the organisations less fashionable, explore the theories less popular’.
(2020) The imagined organization: Spaces, dreams, places. Cheltenham: Edward Elgar. This book represents a narrative quest for a symbolic grounding to help leaders in times when stable social structures and institutions dissolve and disappear. Monika Kostera approaches this sense-making process through innovative research methods, collecting stories from participants and exploring plots and outcomes of an imagined meeting between two symbolic worlds: one of the internal and imaginative and the other of the external and corporate. Organizing is made possible by sense-making. This book represents a narrative quest for a symbolic grounding to help leaders in times when stable social structures and institutions dissolve and disappear. 'Fresh and provoking, Monika Kostera’s book challenges managerial and organizational literature through an evocative process of imagining novel forms of management of organizational life in contemporary societies. This book resonates as a poetic performance that invites students and organizational scholars to symbolically interrogate their research and teaching practices.' Review: Anna Góral (2020), "W organizacyjnym imaginarium: Recenzja książki The Imagined Organization: Spaces, Dreams, (2020) I am not Magritte. London: Wordcatcher. Modern poetry. This collection of poetry materialised in transit: between places and spaces. The poems reflect the sound and feel of these in-between moments, as the author experienced them while passing by. The poems do not form any definite shape: this collection is not a story, not a confession, and certainly not a travelogue. If anything, it springs from the unlikely meeting point between the contexts and the person rubbing against them. Some poems are written in Polish, the native tongue of the author. 'It is time to become human', declares the speaker of Monika Kostera's poem 'Dosyć' ('Enough'), and what that means, in its fullest sense, is the informing concern of I Am Not Magritte, a wonderfully sensual and philosophically provocative collection, (of poems written in diverse tongues) that adds new and unexpected dimension to some of the central questions of our time: identity, the foundations of a humane society and, perhaps the most pressing question of all, in this moment of moral indecisiveness, what more one might need to believe in kinship., John Burnside Endorsement - Just like light, words never go out, they go on and on. So do the images inside us, informed by our travels, our day to day experiences and our cultural and historical references. Monika Kostera throughout I AM NOT MAGRITTE manages to link these disparate elements of her experiences into one continuous experience. She is not MAGRITTE and by example we are not MAGRITTE. Michelle and Brian Holland, artists "And thus spoke Monika, this time in Swedish, English and Polish. In any case, and if I am allowed to give an advice, read this poetry out loud. Not only to yourself, but also at social gatherings - and speak! Or sing, whisper, shout - it’s your freedom but also your duty to make it shine. Poetry before revolution!" (2019) (Edited with: Daniel Ericsson) Organizing hope: Narratives for a better future. Cheltenham: Edward Elgar. Crumbling social institutions, disintegrating structures, and a profound sense of uncertainty are the signs of our time. In this book, this contemporary crisis is explored and illuminated, providing narratives that suggest how the notion of hope can be leveraged to create powerful methods of organizing for the future. Chapters first consider theoretical and philosophical perspectives on hopeful organizing, followed by both empirical discussions about achieving change and more imaginative narratives of alternative and utopian futures, including an exploration of the differing roles of work, creativity, idealism, inclusivity and activism. ‘A roller-coaster of emotion. A trans-disciplinary book full of questions about whether we dare to hope, what future is possible, and what we as readers need to go through to reach it. Importantly, alternative futures for institutions and communities are considered.’ (2019) (Edited with: Ewa Bogacz-Wojtanowska) Siłaczki, szefowe, społeczniczki: Polki organizatorki.
To intrygująca lektura. (2019) Organize ourselves! Inspirations and ideas for self-organization and self-management. London: MayFlyBooks/Ephemera, second revised edition of Occupy Management! We have been led to believe that the commons met their tragic fate because they were outdated and ineffective as a way of organizing human economic and social activity. However, this story only makes sense if we adopt a severely truncated understanding of being human, shorn of insights from psychology, sociology, or ecology. This book proposes organizational ideas and practices born out of the archetype of the commons, as well as tools reclaimed, renewed, and recycled from the vast repository of modern management models. Capitalism is failing and we need to find a better way to organize ourselves, more humanely as well as in accordance with the ecosystem. This is a tremendously important text, standing out among the rising tide of studies and manifestoes aimed at tapping the heretofore neglected yet profuse supplies of human faculties and energies marginalized and suppressed by the orthodox bureaucratic model of management. It offers simultaneously a profound diagnosis of the current state of affairs, an exhaustive inventory of its limitations and deficiencies - as well as opening new vistas and presenting a thorough analysis of an art of management fit to avail itself of the novel opportunities the post-bureaucratic era might offer. - Zygmunt Bauman In its playful style, its photographic illustrations from the author’s valuable collection, its joyful spirit, and its’ totally uninhibited mix of personal storytelling and poetry, this book draws the reader into the author’s private life with the free ranging discussion of ideas. It provides a welcome antidote to the stifling straightness of much academic writing. - Professor Yiannis Gabriel, University of Bath and University of Lund This great book uses the idea of organization as an injunction to take back ‘management’ from those who wish to make it a discipline based on hierarchy and order. Monika Kostera celebrates all the things in heaven and earth that are not dreamed of in conventional managerialism, and use them as springboards to different ways of thinking about management. Read this book if you want to 'occupy management', to make management yours, and make a form of knowledge that can be used by the 99%. - Professor Martin Parker, Bristol University (2018) (Edited with: Łukasz Gaweł) Etnografie instytucji dziedzictwa kulturowego. (2018) Orzechowa. Do dziś pozostało we mnie coś z natury drzewa, bo umiem żywić się światłem, bo bez światła moja dusza wysycha i parcieje. "Ponoć nostalgia to choroba imigrantów. A opowiadania Moniki Kostery działają czarodziejsko: oto czytam cudze wspomnienia, a oczami wyobraźni widzę sceny, ludzi i przedmioty z własnego życia. Monika Kostera’s poetry is in minor, I read it in the keys of Am, Em, Bm. It is blues, outspokenly honest. Most importantly, Monika is blues, and as the tradition have it, she is constantly on the road. This book of blues thus invites you to access many places and people. Have words, will travel. Prof. Tommy Jensen, organization scholar and musician Monika Kostera's poetry just gets better. This collection should be read and re-read. She finds the little details in all the vastness of the universe and its mythology that make it poignantly so much more relevant and almost understandable. Reuben Wolley Going To Delos is the new collection by Monika Kostera, a fascinating and fearless collection of poems that delivers a punch without leaving any visible marks with lines of Kostera’s poems continuing to spin in the mind as you will keep revisiting poems from this great collection, with poems such as ‘The recipe to survive in a world of alienation’, to ‘ I AM A STREETPOET’, a highly recommended collection that will make you think, smile, and question. London, Palgrave Macmillan. This collected volume of essays offers glimpses of the future of university education. While universities consider the spirit of theoretical exchange and intellectual pursuit to be a defining trait of their identity, this book argues that this heritage is disappearing under the influence of the short-term demands of societies and markets. Universities used to be sites of dissent, civil courage and societal conscience, but have now instead become little more than pseudo-businesses, rendering them incapable of remaining critical or independent. However, with more people going to university every year, there is a strong resistance to the notion that the university as a collegial and critical institution is dead, among academics as well as the broader public. With contributions from scholars across the world, this edited collection explores the ramifications of marketization on universities, and provides glimpses of what higher education will look like in the future. It will be of great interest to teachers and students in higher education, as well as policy makers and those interested in the current and future state of higher education. (2017) Edited with: Michael Pirson) Dignity and the Organization. London: Palgrave Macmillan. This important book focuses on the role of human dignity, its protection and promotion in the context of organization and Humanistic Management. The recent phenomenon of humanism in management already has a rich body of literature and takes up many themes both theoretically, and from a practitioner perspective. Dignity and the Organization is the first book to explicitly deal with the topic of human dignity and management. The chapters address various aspects and problems from a humanistically-oriented perspective, taking up issues relevant for the contemporary management theorists and practitioners, and are concerned with organization, management and the social and cultural context. The book develops the notion of human dignity in conceptual and theoretical terms in its practical application, within the context of organizations. (2016) (Edited with: Bogusław Nierenberg) Komunikacja społeczna i zarządzanie humanistyczne. Czas, by zarządzanie wzięło za to budowanie odpowiedzialność.
Monika Kostera (2016) Oneiropeia. Liverpool: Erbacce-Press. Monika Kostera's collection takes us from the pointillist geography of images of Fast Poetry to the almost stories of Slowarium, internal journeys reflected in what might be a real world, where 'normality' is weighed in the balance and found lacking. Intangibility becomes a solid value and each reading brings new meanings, new rewards. Reuben Woolley Monika Kostera’s Oneiropeia is an elegant collection of short poems. The significant point is, in my opinion, her own way to say different things from different angles, such as different cultures. She is Polish but her reality isn’t only Warsaw, it’s also England (Sheffield) and Greece (Epidaurus). Muse is the ancient myth with a tone of a modern voice. An excellent poetry collection. Achilles Katsaros Most artists, poets included, experience the universal- the dark brooding landscape, the joyful sunrise- and extend this universal experience with their own re-assuring voice. Monika Kostera's responses to the world, however, are uncompromisingly personal from the start ("I do not fall in love with the smooth, the symmetric"). The albatross walks safely along the sidewalk, no longer a metaphor for humanities foolish self destruction. Kostera does not add a new reassuring layer but hers is a voice finding a new universal through her expression of it. Now all our nightmare trains can be delayed. Brian Holland
Zygmunt Bauman, Irena Bauman, Jerzy Kociatkiewicz and Monika Kostera (2015) Management in a liquid modern world. London: Polity Press. Management has been one of the driving forces of the last century, indeed an idea and a language that colonized most other institutions, areas of human activity and walks of life, even those that had until recently been regarded as completely unmanageable, such as art, academia and creativity. Some it supported and others it destroyed, but there are few areas in modern societies that have been untouched by it.

Prof. dr hab. Łukasz Gaweł, Uniwersytet Jagielloński Jerzy Kociatkiewicz and Monika Kostera (2014) (eds) Liquid Organization: Zygmunt Bauman and organization theory. Oxford: Routledge. Widely known as a leading intellectual, Zygmunt Bauman’s thinking is often categorized as sociology or philosophy. But his work has been hugely influential in other fields as well, not least within organization studies. From increasing management control and growing standardization of work activities, to the increase in uncertainty and insecurity experienced by contemporary workers, organizations themselves are becoming ever more ephemeral entities. Bauman’s themes: globalization, liquid modernity and postmodern ethics are arguably fundamental to contemporary notions of organization and management and his thinking has never been more relevant. However, despite the obvious and continuing influence of Bauman’s ideas on business studies, there has been no comprehensive attempt to chart his impact on organization theory. In this innovative and insightful collection, an international selection of leading management scholars explore key topics in current organizational discourse, including networked organizations, control and ambiguity, technologies, work and responsibility, extending Bauman’s liquid modernity to the "liquid organization". The book will be essential reading for scholars and academics and students in management and organizational theory, and also sociology, managing culture and organizational ethnography. Monika Kostera (2014) Occupy Management! Inspirations and ideas for self-management and self-organization. Oxford: Routledge. It can be said that our times are characterized both by the omnipresence of organizations and by the destabilization of organized social life, caused by the erosion of its structural and moral foundations such as long-term employment, social trust or an actual observance of the proclaimed codes of ethics. At the same time there is a huge and growing potential for organized change due to the amount of students and graduates of different types of management studies and programmes all over the world. The role of the state may become atrophied and corporations seem all too eager to seize ever more power while renouncing responsibility towards the environment and the employees, but a huge and unprecedented number of people from all walks of life, all social classes and all countries now have the qualifications to take over the responsibility for social organizations. The objective of Occupy Management: Inspirations and Ideas for Self-Organization and Self-Management is to make it evident to the student why and how he or she can manage without becoming part of corporate power structures. Aimed at postgraduate students studying organizational and management theory as well as social entrepreneurship, this book is not a simple repetition of essential knowledge in these areas, but a re-direction of such knowledge towards self-management and self-organization. Reviews: 'Occupy Management! Engages with management from the heart. It explores the joys of organization, and the tyranny of domination. A unique and challenging approach to management in contemporary life' 'This is a remarkable book, simultaneously profound, thought-provoking, and beautiful. Professor Kostera has fashioned a genuinely mesmerizing lens on organizing, a ‘through-the-looking-glass’ one that is considerably more inviting and humanistic than most others in this field. She also combines old-world scholarship and sophistication with highly contemporary thinking. The result is a kind of organizational nouvelle cuisine that is at once lyrical, deep, satisfying, and eye-opening. It will be a welcome read for anyone wanting fresh views, possibilities, and approaches for organizing and managing in today’s world.' 'Recycling valuable concepts and theories from the academic fields of management and organization studies, Occupy Management! will encourage you to rethink the roles self-management and self-organizing can play in deciding whether our future will be sustainable, democratic and humane or will continue its slide down the rabbit hole of hate, fear and oppression. In the spirit of exploring alternative futures, this is organization theory as participatory art!' 'This is a tremendously important text, standing out among the rising tide of studies and manifestoes aimed at tapping the heretofore neglected yet profuse supplies of human faculties and energies marginalized and suppressed by the orthodox bureaucratic model of management. It offers simultaneously a profound diagnosis of the current state of affairs, an exhaustive inventory of its limitations and deficiencies - as well as opening new vistas and presenting a thorough analysis of an art of management fit to avail itself of the novel opportunities the post-bureaucratic era might offer.' Gabriel, Yiannis (2014) Book Review, Management Learning, 45/4, p. 499- 503, DOI 10.1177/1350507614539223 "In its playful style, its photographic illustrations from the author's valuable collection, its joyful spirit, and its totally uninhibited mix of personal storytelling and poetry draws the reader into the author's private life with the free ranging discussion of ideas; this book provides a welcome antidote to the stifling straightness of much academic writing. This will, of course, displease many scholarly readers who may turn to the author and say "With what authority do you speak?" "Who entitles you to speak like this?" I am sure that, as someone who grew up in Communist Poland, the author will have no difficulty in answering back "I write what I wish and those who want to read my work can; those who don't are not forced to do so." This then is not a book for those who would like a linear engagement with management, positive or critical. It is a book that will interest and maybe inspire those who feel that the time is ripe to start thinking and talking about management in a different way, neither glamorizing it nor vilifying it but beginning to reclaim it, or, as the book's title suggests "occupy it."[...] As someone who has long been fascinated by the unmanaged and unmanageable qualities of life in and out of organizations, I was not won over by Kostera's attempt to reclaim and recycle management.
I agree that there is much that management can accomplish and even more that it may
accomplish if shorn of its managerialist reflexes. It would, of course, be naive to believe that life Aneta Milczarczyk (2015) Book review, Scandinavian Journal of Management, http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.scaman.2015.07.001 This book discusses non-mainstream management based on

Wyobraźnia organizacyjna w praktyce jest kolejną publikacją z serii Zarządzanie. Autorzy przedstawiają wyniki swoich prac i badań na temat roli wyobraźni organizacyjnej w praktyce. Filozofowie i uczeni od dawna przypisują wyobraźni podstawowe znaczenia w procesie poznawania świata i nadawania mu sensu. Stąd jej rola w naukach społecznych, w tym w nauce o organizacji. Monika Kostera we Wstępie cytuje licznych autorów, klasyków nauki o zarządzaniu, uznających wyobraźnię za niezbędny atrybut i przesłankę powodzenia w zarządzaniu, szczególnie wśród okoliczności związanych z faktem nieustannej zmiany organizacji i jej otoczenia. Wyobraźnia w odniesieniu do procesów organizowania oznacza umiejętność wychodzenia poza bieżące miejsce i rolę w strukturze organizacyjnej i myślenie o organizacji w szerszej perspektywie i w nowych kategoriach. Używanie wyobraźni w pracy menedżera oznacza stosowanie innego - nieliniowego - typu racjonalności, co daje szansę rozwiązywania coraz bardziej złożonych problemów, uwikłanych w rozmaite konteksty i niepewność otoczenia. Monika Kostera (2010) Organizacje i archetypy. Ta książka stawia sobie właśnie taki cel - by zaoferować Czytelnikowi język i symbolikę, które pozwalają rozwijać wyobraźnię organizacyjną.
Mary Jo Hatch and Andrzej Koźmiński (2010) Trzy oblicza przywództwa. (Translation from Polish by Tomasz Wrzesiewski). Warszawa: WAiP.

Ostatnimi czasy niektóre spośród tych szkół zaczynają być przedstawiane polskiemu Czytelnikowi, w szczególności dotyczy to kierunków związanych z zarządzaniem wiedzą i negocjacjami. Beata Glinka (do wyd. I) "Zarządzanie w XXI wieku" to podręcznik niezwykle interesujący i nietypowy. Beata Glinka (do wyd. II)

Kostera, wykształcona w Szwecji, zatrudniona w Polsce i obecna w międzynarodowych sieciach badawczych, oferuje antologię pomysłową, wielostronną, a często popartą własnymi badaniami empirycznymi współautorów. prof.

Kostera, Monika (2007) (edited with Daniel Hjorth) Entrepreneurship and the Experience Economy. Copenhagen: Copenhagen Business School Press.
This book brings together a wide range of empirical studies, all disclosing and substantiating the so-called experience economy with a particular focus on its entrepreneurial aspects. The contributors both elaborate and clarify the entrepreneurial nature of the experience economy. They illustrate concrete examples of how it is created and made to work, thereby providing the reader with a unique insight into the significant shift from a managerial to an entrepreneurial economy. The chapters in the book also herald another deeply transformative aspect of this shift: its emphasis on play, affect, and passion, all human qualities that the industrial society/economy had marginalized. Kostera, Monika (2005) The quest for the self-actualizing organization. Malmö: Liber. This is not a book about self-improvement, New Age, best practices or the management of culture. It does not solve existential problems or answer all of your questions. This book is a quest, a textual travel in ideas about organizing and self-actualization. People often feel that it is possible and right to both be an individual and part of a collective - yet it seems to rarely be realized in contemporary business organizations. There is often a dichotomy at work between the individual and the collective dimension in organizations. While not inquiring into the reasons of this, the book sets out to tell a story about the transcending of the seeming dichotomy. It does this through a collage of stories gathered from various authors: organization theorists, students, friends, exploring aspects of the encounter between the organizational and the spiritual domains. Hatch, Mary Jo, Monika Kostera, and Andrzej Kozminski (2005) The three faces of leadership: Manager, artist, priest. Blackwell Publishing.
The Three Faces of Leadership takes readers inside the minds of CEOs who have been celebrated by the Harvard Business Review over the last decade of the twentieth century. Drawing on interviews with these famous CEOs, Mary Jo Hatch, Monika Kostera and Andrzej K. Kozminski demonstrate how business leaders today use aesthetics, specifically storytelling, dramatizing and mythmaking, to lead their companies successfully. They look at how they inspire organizations through their creativity, virtue and faith, and thus show the faces of the artist and priest alongside the technical and rational face of the manager. The Three Faces of Leadership features clear and accessible explanations of the aesthetic philosophy of management: as applied to the concepts of creativity, imagination, courage, virtue, inspiration, faith and ethics. It presents techniques for developing these qualities as an essential part of leadership; together with the capacity to communicate them to others. Aesthetic leadership practices are linked to organizational culture, change, vision, values and identity. In this way, the book encourages students and executives to align the creative and spiritual aspects of business with their technical training and practice. Kostera, Monika (2003/2005/2010) Antropologia organizacji: Metodologia badań terenowych. (Anthropology of organization: Methodology of field research). Warszawa: PWN.
poziomie pracy dyplomowej, magisterskiej i doktorskiej zarówno w poprawnym przeprowadzeniu
Kelemen, Mihaela and Monika Kostera (eds.) (2002) Critical management research in Eastern Europe: Managing the transition. Palgrave-Macmillan.
The process of transition in Eastern European countries is one in which ideas of the past and present, both local and Western, meet and conflict. Presenting a wealth of ethnographic and interview-based research, "Critical Management Research in Eastern Europe" argues that the reform process in Central and Eastern Europe has been dominated by the traditional "Western" view of management practice. However, this approach overlooks the fact that certain managerial and organizational practices developed in Central and Eastern Europe may still be appropriate and indeed effective within this particular setting. The book brings together authors from both East and West Europe to evaluate how the two systems can best be harmonized, which is particularly important in the context of EU enlargement.
Höpfl, Heather and Monika Kostera (eds.) (2002/2014) Interpreting the maternal organization. London-New York: Routledge. Book Description Over the past ten to fifteen years there has been an increasing interest in emotion in organizations, in diversity, ethics, care and the ubiquitous pursuit of quality. These concerns, however, have consistently been reduced to issues of management and regulation. There is now a growing need to confront issues related to the dehumanization of organizations. This book brings these issues together, presenting an original construction of the organization via an emphasis on the (m)other. This book is not a feminist tract, nor is it primarily about the experiences of women in organizations. It rather argues that conventional representations of the organization are patriarchal, masculine, directed by the animus and that such representations reduce the notion of 'organization' to abstract relationships, rational actions and purposive behaviour. This challenging book will be of essential interest to all critical management theorists. With its innovative approach, it will also appeal to students, teachers, and all those looking for an approach to management that does justice to the complexity, ambivalence and chaos of the world of organizing. Postmodernistyczny
